G&G P4100DW Wireless Duplex Laser Printer – First Impressions / Review

0

I was looking for a simple monochrome laser printer for light home use. My priorities were straightforward: wireless printing, reliable black-and-white output, and easy operation. Automatic duplex printing was a nice bonus.

Good Value

I've owned similar Brother laser printers in the past and have always considered them the benchmark in this category. I decided to take a chance on the G&G P4100DW because it was by far the least expensive wireless duplex laser printer I could find; about 35% cheaper than a comparable Brother model.

Tough Setup

The biggest downside is the initial setup.

The included instructions are really difficult to follow. Honestly, they would have benefited from a rewrite using AI. The printer comes with an installation CD, which isn't very helpful when many modern laptops and desktops don't even have optical drives anymore.

The marketed "one-click installation" never worked for me. After searching, I eventually found the G&G P4100DW drivers online. If you're setting this printer up, I'd skip the one-click installer and go straight to the manual installation option...it was much more reliable in my experience.

There were also a couple of things that weren't obvious:

  • You need to remove the toner, take off the protective stickers, and reinstall it before use.
  • In my case, I had to unplug/plug the USB wire into the printer port to get it to recognize it during the setup process.
  • Letter-size (LTR) paper doesn't fit by default. You have to manually extend the paper tray, and then it actually physically sticks out the back of the printer. It's not sticking out a huge amount, but I'd never seen this on any of my previous Brother printers, so at first I thought I was doing something wrong.

Once I figured everything out, the printer has actually been working well. Printing is fast enough, wireless printing works, and the print quality is what I expected from a monochrome laser printer.

Overall, if you're willing to potentially be frustrated, spend a little extra time getting through the initial setup, I think this printer offers good value for the price. It's a newer brand, so there's less information available online, but if it proves reliable over the long term, paying roughly 35% less than an equivalent Brother printer could make it a great buy.

Pros

  • Good value for the price
  • Wireless and automatic duplex printing
  • Good print quality
  • Compact and suitable for light home use

Cons

  • Confusing setup instructions
  • One-click installer didn't work & installation CD was useless
  • Paper tray extension for letter-size paper isn't obvious
